I use gesso for adult double-sided coloring books. At the same time, I personally applied gesso with a card and a foam brush. Both methods gave me a smooth surface with no roughness. The plaster will curl up the side, but if you blow dry it right away you won't have that problem. My problem is that the markers and watercolor are on top/on top and cannot be blended.
