Something for simpler times, this scope reminds me of that time. It is concise and clean in its design. No small grips etc (no need for link arms in the scope body). This scope was designed to be carried into wide fields and used without a tripod. It doesn't sound amazing, but it is. It has very large, thick rubber lens caps that stick out about 3 inches along the body of the scope. A strap goes through them and then a small wire loop that prevents you from losing them. It also offers incredible lens protection. You can simply throw the strap over your shoulder and take it off. This is the HUNTER AREA, plain and simple. Hunters and ornithologists are two different animals. I don't really care about the exact color of this moose in the woods, I'm more concerned if it's a trophy animal. This visor deploys quickly and is very quiet. It's great that when you hold the camera in your hand, you can focus and zoom without moving your hands. There is a large strap that helps stabilize the scope. I can keep it stable up to 25 power without assist. This is done without outside help, ie relying on nothing. If you can hold the gun steady, you can hold this. When performance goes up, you need something to lean on. It's nice to lean against a tree or a ledge. Focusing is done by rotating the front tube. People have complained that this scope has a different focusing system. But that's why it's awesome, you can also focus the scope by rotating the back half while holding the front barrel. This is how I like to use it: the front barrel can hit a tree and you rotate the BACK of the scope to focus. This area has an unrealistic resolution, ie how sharp the image is over the entire zoom range. Not many oscilloscopes can tell that. If you want a high-contrast image, buy something else. This high-contrast image leaves people in awe when looking at Swarovski crystals (don't slam it, please read below). They have specially treated lenses to increase contrast, so the image is rich in contrast. If you want perfect color reproduction, buy something else. It does not contain the latest color error additives to prevent color fringing in all colors. So what's so good about this stuff? The resolution of the image is as high as possible, ie you can see very small details even from afar. This is not a trivial matter. To build a high-resolution oscilloscope, you must have high accuracy in all aspects of the design. The lens has to be very well made and everything has to be perfectly coordinated. Only the best and most expensive rifle scope manufacturers can do that. It's incredibly durable, with high-performance armor throughout. It has a great integrated strap that secures the huge rubber eyecups so you don't lose them. It has excellent resolution and is ideal for long-distance bullet hole detection. While this scope is very good on a tripod, it's actually better without it. I don't know about you, but I think tripods are a big problem. You have to carry them, set them up, and they're clumsy and slow. This is the kind of item that becomes a cult classic after discontinuation, most people don't get it. You look into a big scope in a retail store or at a shooting range on a heavy tripod and then compare it to this amazing scope and YES a big scope makes for a more impressive picture. But you take those two scopes to the mountains and try to use them without a tripod, and this big regular scope will have you in tears in no time. Travel light and get down to business quickly. Last but not least, it is about half the price of other scopes with comparable resolution. Swarovski makes great optics, they are amazing in so many ways. Do not take my comments as an insult in any way. I just think that for hunting and traveling light off-road, this Zeiss scope is much better suited. UPDATE: I just added a Manfrotto monopod and it's amazing. I can keep myself stable at 45 strength and also have the necessary mobility and light weight. If you haven't tried a quality monopod yet, you're missing out on a great option for quick, easy, and quick spotting scope deployment. LAST UPDATE: Unfortunately, despite the fact that this scope was for hiking, I needed a scope for target shooting. So, with a heavy heart, I sent it back almost unused. If you are looking for a scope, you need an eyepiece with a long eye relief.
