I went with a 3 inch antenna instead of the standard one and not something shorter or a plug. I'm just tired of knocking on an open garage door and taking it off for a car wash and I listen to XM (separate antenna) almost 100% of the time. I went with a short antenna so there would at least be some reception, but no shorter than 3". Without a load coil, physics doesn't allow you to improve reception with an inconsistent antenna length, which they are. (And OEM too , btw, but longer and therefore better.) There aren't many stations near me, but I found 3 FM stations just by searching my radio, and a few more by tuning in manually. No AM reception from Search but haven't tried manually yet (AM will definitely be the group most affected by your antenna being cut.) Again I listen to XM almost exclusively so I'm happy with what I got and I have a standard antenna under the back seat in case of a zombie apocalypse.
