Check Your Filters Before Filtering Wine

We lost over 6 gallons of finished wine because filters were contaminated with some type of soap or residue from production. We filtered right before bottling and took a small sample to measure SO2 and PH. What we tasted in the sample was a soapy aftertaste in the wine. We changed the filter pads and the taste was still soapy. We tried another wine straight from another bottle before it hit the filter and everything was fine. So we tried the fine filter, only let water through, and everything was fine. However, when we went back to another set of coarse pads that only had water flowing through the filter, it was soapy again. Therefore, we did not think that the pods would not deteriorate and decided to bottle without filtration (the wine went through malolactic fermentation and aging in oak barrels). Conclusion: 1) We are not sure if we will continue to use our super or mini jets after this experience - several pads were ruined covering both the super and these mini jet pads. 2) I would recommend that after installing the filter pads you only try water on the exit for damaged seals. They smell different even after 1 minute of aging. 3) We've had good success with Buon Vino before, but it's beyond disappointing to have to leave out wine at the last step of the process. 4) Don't think the filter is good. Have lots of backups if you want to use this. 5) Instead, you can just use the built-in filter with the filler.
