Good Battery Tester

The main benefit of a conductivity tester like the BA101 is being able to detect when your battery is nearing the end of its life before leaving you stranded by a dead battery. Such a tester allows you to regularly test the battery and log its capacity. When the BA101 tells you the battery needs replacing, the battery may still be able to start your car, but the days until you can't are numbered. You can also check your car's starting and charging system. The printed manual is fine, although some of the English translations look odd. The BA101 can print out the results of the most recent test using a PC, although you can just as easily write the results down. The Quicklynks BA101 appears to be identical to other brands of BA101 testers available from Revain such as the Ancel BA101. BA101 is easy to connect and use. Just make sure the notched portion of the clip makes good contact with the battery post or connector as the notched portion is insulated from the rest of the clip. Battery capacity measurements are based on the conductance method, which provides the calculated CCA (or other capacity standard that you can specify during the test). The writing on the display is small, so if you need glasses to read a book, you'll need them for the BA101. Several times I got a blank white display when connecting the BA101. I couldn't understand why. The quick test settings use the battery's AH rating to get readings. If your battery doesn't have an AH rating, skip the quick test and use one of the other tests. The measured CCA is accurate, but the nominal CCA with this setting is a calculated value only and does not necessarily reflect the battery's actual CCA rating. Instead I would use one of the other tests. The "Battery in Vehicle" setting requires a battery CCA rating to be entered and gives you a measured CCA based on conductivity and a calculated "healthy" percentage. The percent charge indicator is based on battery voltage and lets you know if the battery needs to be charged to get an accurate CCA reading. If the battery has recently been charged or the vehicle has been driven recently, the battery may have a surface charge and the BA101 will prompt you to turn on the headlights to remove the surface charge before testing. A battery voltage of 12.7 V gives correct test results. Vehicle battery setup also includes starting and charging tests. The start test measures the start time and the minimum battery voltage measured during start. I found the start time measurement to be inaccurate, but the voltage measurement was correct. The charging test measures the residual ripple (to detect a defective alternator diode) and the charging voltage. The instructions don't say whether you rev the engine to 2500 rpm before or after pressing ENTER. If this happens later you'll need an assistant to push the button while you crank the engine as the cable isn't long enough to carry the BA101 into the car while it's connected to the battery. WARNING: Many modern vehicles have alternator control systems where the charge voltage is controlled by the ECM or PCM. With these vehicles, the charging voltage can drop below 13 V when there is no battery demand. This will cause the BA101 to incorrectly tell you that the charging system is faulty. On many of these vehicles, turning on the headlights prevents the computer charging voltage from dropping. If you get a low charge voltage, try turning on the headlights and repeat the test. The off-vehicle battery checks the battery's CCA without the possible influence of the vehicle's wiring. This is the most accurate reading and should be used to check the health of a battery that may have passed the "Replace" test with the "Battery On Vehicle" setting. Overall I give the BA101 four stars. One star off for the small display, no mention of the insulated braces that need to be in contact, no mention of low charge voltage which is normal for PCM controlled alternators, and the fact that I got a blank white display a few times. for no apparent reason.
