What you need: 1) Original Moen faucet cartridge. Other people say that the generic brand causes problems and I believe them. 2) cartridge remover. You can do without it if the cartridge does not need to be replaced at all. 3) cartridge lock. If you drop the original on the wall, you won't get it back. 4) New faucet handle. If the cartridge has deteriorated, then in all likelihood the shower handle has also deteriorated. This is the effect of chlorine. The valve is a brass tube with long staggered slots for the water supply. The rubber seal on my old cartridge came loose and was partially stuck in one of these slots. I could pull the cartridge out with old sewer lock pliers, but there's little doubt the valve and half the pipes in my house would have come out with it. The cartridge remover uses a push-pull mechanism to safely remove the valve. My advice is to spend four more points or be prepared to call a plumber after you break or lose something.
