Usually always works - we have over 20 of these in the Mac Store and for some reason they often work better than HDMI/DVI connections, Apple/Mac I think this being a villain never helps and doesn't care. The only reason this isn't 5 stars is that sometimes these devices break, I'm not sure if it's the Thunderbolt connector or the electronics failing - I have 3 unreliable/bad ones on my desk (and probably over 20 in everyday use) - Something to expect for users who connect and disconnect multiple times a day I guess. CM offered to take them under warranty, the problem for me is that the shipping almost exceeds the cost of the item, and I also have no way of attributing the receipts to the device.
