I don't think they are 100% wool, I think they can be mixed with synthetic fibers or some kind of glue. I am an experienced seamstress and quilter and have been using wool pads for a long time and have never had this problem. I followed the instructions on this new pad which said "Make sure you are using a clean iron". What I did. As soon as I put the iron on the pad, the surface puckered up a bit, leaving a very sticky residue on my iron. My iron was clean! But since it was an old iron, I thought "maybe" it wasn't completely clean. So I used my BRAND NEW iron which was perfectly clean and it did the same thing. Now I have two full irons. And whatever it is, it won't come off my iron cleaner. As the iron cools, the residue will feel like plastic, hard as stone. My iron was on the highest setting (for linens) but that shouldn't matter as the liner says the mat can withstand any temperature. I'm sending the mat back today for a refund but that doesn't help with the current mess with both of my irons. Dissatisfied.
