This scanner will NOT play any sound on fully encrypted systems. Period. You will see that the key is raised but you will not hear anything. SECOND! This scanner will NOT "decrypt" or "decrypt" the system. If you hear a "static hum" when turning on the channel buttons, they are scrambled. There is no way to decrypt it. THIRD! Has Uniden's ProVoice and DMR systems AFTER PAID updates. ProVoice is $45 and DMR costs a whopping $60. Check the systems you will be using to see if any of these apply to you. Probably the most important thing I can tell you, and the best advice I can give here, is to pay for a premium account on RadioReference.com. If you're paying more than $350 for a scanner, it's worth spending another $15 for a 180-day subscription. That's what programming does. better. Most will still need some time to figure out all the features like systems, groups, channels, and keyboard shortcuts. The scanner comes with a USB programming cable. Reviews that the speaker is quiet or muffled are wrong. I think, some of the reviews were a little harsh but it could certainly be better. After all, we pay a lot for this car. Two days after receiving the scanner, I ordered an external Uniden speaker for $16. Overall rating 5 stars. Updates, encryption and other things mentioned above are not the fault of the scanners.
