After a series of recent break-ins at our neighborhood club, I decided we needed to increase home security. After much research, here's what I did: Converted all of our outdoor lights to motion sensors. Added a security plate to one door that needed strengthening, a security chain to another, and a "Charlie Bar" in place of the stick we used on the bottom of our sliding glass door. I also installed a glass breakage alarm on the sliding glass door and entry window next to the front door. Last but not least, regarding this review, I purchased the Skylink SC-1000 Complete Wireless Alarm System. I then bought three additional door sensors (now every five exterior doors have one) and an additional key fob transmitter. This is after reading many mostly positive reviews about this system. I agree with most reviewers that this system is value for money. Despite being cheap, it does the job. I had very few problems installing it. My only negative comments are: The audio quality of the message you record on the dialer is extremely poor. It would be wise to ask for a few extra dollars to improve this. Or ask the customer to buy the required 9V batteries and use those cost savings for upgraded audio components. Two of the three 9 volt batteries that came with the system were very weak and I still had to replace them for $5. The motion sensor that came with my system was defective. I had to ship it to Skylink in California. It took a month to get a replacement. Some reviewers mention a vulnerability in the alarm and dialer panel. If an attacker quickly gains access to alarm clocks and dialers, they can destroy/disable them. My decision was to put them in our laundry room. This arrangement makes them easily accessible when entering and exiting the home. Our usual entrance to the home is from the attached garage through the barred door to the laundry room. I added a phone jack to the laundry room to dial and a lock on the door between the laundry room and the rest of the house. The laundry room now also serves as a security room with locks on both doors. I'm considering adding an extra Skylink sounder box outside. Otherwise I'm done. I didn't spend a lot of money and didn't have monthly fees for third-party dialers. Provided the components don't break down in the short term, I'm happy camping. I'm not saying our house is burglar-proof now. no But if we're home, we'll know for sure if anyone's trying to get in. And when we're not home, I think it's safe enough that would-be invaders are likely to move on to easier prey.
