They work very well.

I already have this mat and bought it for a friend who has complained about litter stains coming out of the tray. These mats are great for catching litter that gets stuck on a kitten's paws. And so far, none of the seven cats I've personally met have had trouble walking on mats. They feel soft underfoot.
