They pretty much live up to my expectations. Nothing magical, but fun nonetheless. When you see a cut out shape that you imagine looks like a thing and you trace it, it magically doesn't look like a realistic drawing of that thing. You will need to enter some of your own information. For example, one that looks like a slice of watermelon looks more like Swiss cheese on paper. But if you draw a few extra lines yourself, voila, watermelon! You'll need very fine-tipped pens to get in some of the tiny gaps. When applying paint, you'll need a very small applicator or some washi so you don't accidentally turn on part of the adjacent shape. I used a mechanical pencil and traced them on the pages of junk magazines or cards for a naive rustic look. You can do this lightly and then go over it with a darker pencil or ballpoint pen if you like. The only cheaper and better alternative is to learn to draw.
