As another reviewer noted, I suspect it was an open box or demo/show lens could have. It was a US market lens, it came with all parts/accessories/etc but the box was badly worn and the rubber of the lens was covered in chalk. Or maybe it was a very old stock they wanted to sell since it was over $200 cheaper than another Nikon 16-35 F/4 VR "Choice Revain" list at the time. Despite this, I found the lens to have very strong low-level distortion (although most of the time it can be fixed in PP), plus the packaging issues and the possibility of being opened in the box, I decided to return it.
