Review on Steven Raichlen Best Barbecue Tuscan by Kara Davis

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Nice cast iron grate but not flat and the way the legs attach seems flimsy

The small diameter threaded bolts that attach the legs to the grate do not inspire confidence. From the box, all the bolts are screwed into the legs, and then you screw the legs into the grate to assemble the item. When I unscrewed one of the legs, the bobby pin stayed in the trellis. The remaining 3 rivets remained in the legs. In any case, if one of the cleats ever breaks, one end will likely get stuck in the leg and the other end in the grate, making the broken pieces difficult to remove. In my opinion it would be better to use a screw connection. The grid itself is not flat. If I place it on a known flat surface, the rust warps visibly. Then when I attach the legs, the four legs don't sit flat. The unit is unstable and I had to use some high temp epoxy to attach some stainless steel washers to the leg as spacers. For this job, all of those shortcomings probably won't matter much. I'm sure the warped surface of the grate is good for frying hamburgers etc. The height of the leg needs to be perfect for my parrilla, and tilting it by a fraction of an inch won't affect how much heat gets to the food. In my opinion, this is more indicative of poor design and attention to product quality control.
