I bought this thinking it was a 'safe' service/charger. I have searched for more battery maintenance products but most do both. I wanted a low charge current and only 12V in case the AC goes out (happens about 3 or 4 times a year) - I didn't want to worry about the device doing something stupid if that happened (like resetting to 6V or blind pumping big up to date). I was surprised when it lit up when I connected the ground (plus was already connected) - I wasn't expecting that. This means a fairly large power consumption. In fact, this thing started blinking green, indicating it was charging. According to the instructions, it was not plugged into an outlet. I don't think it should. I also bought another brand for my other car and it does NOT sparkle when I plug in the battery and doesn't show it's charging until you plug it into an outlet. Two stars deducted for that. If nobody else has this problem please leave a comment and I will undo it and update the rating. After plugging it into an outlet, I carefully monitored the battery's voltage while charging to make sure it was doing nothing. "Poorly". As he slowly charged the battery, the voltage rose. The last reading while charging was 14.36V. After saying it was charging, the voltage was 14.4V, so it's working.
