I've been drinking without one of them for 5 years. I finally decided to spend the money and buy one (even though they're pretty cheap) and I can't believe what I've lost. It used to be a hassle to monitor the movement of the mash and the brewing process because I always had to pick up the jug and chill the sample. This measurement takes a few seconds, just fantastic. The initial calibration wasn't entirely correct, but I just followed the instructions and after 1 minute everything was fine. When tested at 1.040 wort (measured with my hydrometer) the refractometer was accurate. After 10 uses I checked the calibration again and it was still correct. Mine came with a cloth pouch which is not in the picture.
