Review on πŸ”Œ Silver Long Shaft 12V DC Dimmer for LED, Halogen, Incandescent - Ideal for RV, Auto, Truck, Marine, Strip Lighting by Billy Berry

Revainrating 5 out of 5

It's not cheap, but this one did exactly what I wanted it to do.

I used this controller with SMD LED strips. I would say a strip of light uses between 12 and 24 watts. For a 12 volt circuit, this is 1 to 2 amps. This is well within the advertised 4.5 amp rating of this dimmer. It does exactly what I wanted. It has a slight detent (a slight click, like a radio volume control) that completely turns the device off. You then turn it clockwise after one click and the lights slowly get full bright. I felt that the dimming level was proportional to the dimmer's span. I put my finger on the small case and it never felt warm. I think that's a good indicator that the device isn't using too much power. I'll say that, the instructions are a bit confusing. There are different patterns for LEDs and other lights and it can be confusing for some - that's about it for me. But I found a step-by-step description of exactly what went where in the installation letter. I used that and everything went great. Three nuts were included but they were too big for the wires I was using. I used the smaller wire nuts I already had. A diode was also fitted if you wanted to use it to control the motor. So far I am very happy with the dimmer. Before that I bought two cheaper dimmers. One worked for a week and then quit. The other does not have a fully off position. This means that the device is constantly consuming battery power. It's a little pricey but seems like a quality product. I will mention one caveat. A sealed unit of this size cannot fail to provide adequate heat dissipation capability. My only opinion is that those who push this block to its utmost limits can make it fail. FYI: I've learned a few things with LEDs over the years. Some of them are just not suitable for use with a dimmer - any dimmer. It's not Dimmer's fault. It has to do with the wiring and design of the LED. Blaming the dimmer and giving it a bad review under the circumstances is just plain unfair IMHO. I'm writing this on June 29, 2018. If this thing fails I'll post an update.
