Review on πŸ’Ύ Sabrent USB 3.0 to SATA HDD/SSD External Lay-Flat Docking Station [Supports UASP] (EC-DFLT) by John Langdon

It works, but not without problems.

I liked the look of the case and how easy it was to install the hard drive thanks to the hinged door. Among other things, I think I should have read the reviews before buying. Here are the problems I had after installing a 4TB hard drive that was already plugged in and filled with data: 1. Shows up as an unknown device in Device Manager. I uninstalled it via Device Manager, unplugged it from the USB 3.0 port, waited a few minutes and plugged it back in. Now it shows up as "SABRENT" under "Disk" in Device Manager.2. Now when the PC sees a drive, it doesn't assign a drive letter to it. I go into Disk Manager and the drive shows as Disk 1 and the storage as 16384.00 GB? Also, the partition was shown as a GPT protective partition. I've spent hours searching for this to understand what it means and how to fix it! After reading a few reviews, I narrowed the problem down to the standard firmware on the Sabrent cases. It stinks! After finding James Kirk's review, I found that the solution is to download the Jmicron JMS578 Sata USB 3.0 controller firmware update (search for it online). Plug in the enclosure without a hard drive, power it on and run fwupdatetool.exe. In the tool, download the .bin file associated with Bus Power. When it's done, you'll be prompted to turn off the device. I put the hard drive in the case, turned it back on and hooray! The default drive letter for the hard disk is now visible and available in Windows Explorer. All of this is too complicated for most people to do something that should be "plug and play". I'm glad I was able to get it working, but I would suggest getting something that works better.

Pros
  • Ease of use
Cons
  • Cable is shorter than other models
