Our previous mat lasted 7 years. This one doesn't last 6 months: the plastic loops on it get caught in the cats' claws, so they pull on it to get free (here all cats get their claws clipped at least once a month). Then they start pulling on it to play with it, which means it's started to tear. In January we had a young cat that gnaws on everything, including this carpet. The base is so thin that he can easily tear off pieces of it with his teeth. I expect a cat product to be strong enough that they can't bite or scratch it - IT DON'T. I will pick up any bitten or torn pieces and throw everything in the trash can.
