I'm mostly joking when I say this rolling pin is low-maintenance, but there are actually a few things you should be aware of. The first thing I would like Joseph Joseph to do is to coat the wood with food safe wax before putting it in the box because the wood will be bone dry. The care instructions instruct you to towel dry the piece of wood immediately after washing so it doesn't soak up the water, and then dry it out as it dries, which can lead to splitting. Be sure to pay attention. Second, they tell you to oil the pen if necessary. Well, you need it right out of the box. I oiled it (Boos Block Board Cream, although I only dream of Boos Block Board) and let it sit for about 4 hours. It absorbed the cream completely and still looked dry at the time so I added another penny and left it on overnight. When I wiped off the excess in the morning there was a barely noticeable wisp on the paper towel which really shows how dry and 'thirsty' the wood in the box is. I suppose that's where all the cleavage complaints are coming from. Looking at the uploaded photos of the cotter pins they look very dry. If your wood looks white then it is dry. It really takes about 30 seconds to grease a needle (or board, wooden spoon, or knife handle), so it's definitely worth it. I really wish Joseph Joseph had sanded the wood finer, it's a lot rougher than I expected. Overall, this is a smart, functional, and attractive design.
