I've been cooking with cast iron for years - I love it - and it was only about 2 years ago that I discovered how chain mail can be a great brush. I have several of these; the kind that's just a big mail rectangle. Trying to clean a pot or pan with it takes some effort, but chain mail really helps remove stubborn dirt from the iron without washing out the soap or anything else that dries out the iron. I saw that and thought, at first it's stupid, but then I said, you know what, maybe this will really make it easier. So, gave him a chance. and i can say that it is much better with silicone insert than without. This makes the mail more like an actual sponge for you to hold, making it easier for you to get the real 'cleaning' effect. And it takes less time. Another plus, when the pan is hot it's always easier to clean, you now have more distance between your hand and the cast iron. I've used it about a dozen times and can't complain! Silicone holds up well and is fairly easy to keep clean. Of course it's more difficult than without a silicone insert, but that's okay. It's worth it as it has significantly reduced my cleaning time. So if you're a fan of cast iron, you'll love this.
