I had to return this item because I really don't think it was for any type of tank under 10 gallons. I have an 8 gallon and it was very difficult to maneuver without draining the tank side of the water from an adapter that attaches to the side of the pump. It has great suction and cleans my gravel thoroughly, but the filter in the gravel cleaner kept falling out and adding a lot of dirt to the tank. Also, taking the entire tool out of the water creates a lot of mess, so have a large bucket handy. In addition, an additional filter bag should be provided as it retains some of the dirt but still redistributes some back into the tank. The water change adapter is pretty fast so keep an eye on it because when I say it's fast, it's FAST. Very effective for a quick water change but I recommend buying another water transfer hose as the pump is so powerful that every time I used the water changer the hose fell off immediately even with changes. In addition, the hose is too short and, despite the adapter/hose holder, I often fell out of the bucket. All in all it was a bit messier than a regular siphon for a small tank, but I'm sure it will work better with larger tanks.
