Review on AmScope SE420Z Professional Microscope Magnification by Joe Mix

***Updated at the end*** The SE420Z was purchased as an electronic assembly and test tool and is a great microscope if you know what you are buying. Basically, it's similar to my home, but there are a few annoying differences. The specification should state more clearly that this microscope includes a 2X objective and a pair of 10X and 20X eyepieces. I assumed it was a 1X lens and bought additional 5X and 10X eyepieces so I have some overlapping eyepiece lenses and not as much magnification as I would like. (Electronic assembly and soldering work well for me at 5x-10x magnification.) Also, the illumination on this microscope is poor compared to what I have at home. The incandescent bulb on it gives off meager light compared to the LED my home microscope is equipped with. I'm trying to find a good BA9S base 12V AC LED replacement bulb but so far without much success. (I may have to make some myself.) Overall, this is a great microscope and I got exactly what was advertised, but I also made a few assumptions that were proven wrong in making this purchase. One star deducted for lack of details in the description. (The lenses are interchangeable, by the way, but the 1X lens for this microscope doesn't seem to be available anywhere.) ***Updated 10/11/2014*** I was able to find a replacement LED bulb which greatly improves the porthole I have complained to me above. I bought "Qoossein Ba9s 5w 270-300lm 6500-7000k Cree Xp-e White Light Led" from Revain and it increased the lighting by 3 or 4 times which makes it perfect for PCB mounting. I was able to find a 1X lens as well, but I had to find it as a used part and adjust it myself, so it's not that easy to fix. All in all this is now a microscope that is perfect for my purposes but if I had to redo it I would buy a model with LED light and a lower magnification lens. However, the LED was an excellent replacement.
