Review on AV Access Extender Operating Synchronously by Mark Holloway

The device works fine but the included power adapter has wrong specifications

I've tried several other USB2 expansion devices and this is the first one that works with all of mine. I use it for astrophotography between my home computer and the telescope outside with a 50m CAT7 cable. I had problems with random disconnects, the entire adapter went out for a second, resulting in all USB devices being "disconnected" and "reconnected" within 3 seconds. This obviously caused devastation and destruction. After testing for 3 days and the longest stable connection was 15 hours, I replaced the included 0.5A power adapter with a 1.5A power adapter and it has been rock solid so far. That makes sense, the device specs are 500mA per port, and the device itself needs power too. So if you calculate each port to the specs, it needs 5V * 500mA = 2.5W, and there are 4 ports, so 4 x 2.5W = 10W, and let's add extra 2W for that Add the device itself, so the minimum power the power supply must have is 12W. . The included adapter is rated at 12V * 0.5A = 6W, which is HALF the power needed to reliably power everything. I am powering 3 astrocams and the filter wheel directly from this unit so it needs full power. I believe that the included power supply was unable to meet the power requirements and the unit would occasionally restart or shut down, causing all USB devices to be quickly unplugged and plugged back in. The 12V power supply used for this device must be at least 1A. AC adapters are widely available and cheap, so I have no problem using a better one than the one that comes with it. It's just disappointing that they don't do the math and provide a decent power supply. Previous devices like this one I've tried have had many issues with my devices working, some connect and work fine, others don't detect at all or work intermittently. So far this one has always seen all my devices and works fine until I use it in combination with another hub and it has enough power to run it. I have not tried this with CAT5e or CAT6 cables, I am using a good quality heavy duty CAT7 cable.
