I have a very old wall table lamp with an Edison fitting for a standard incandescent bulb and a T9 Circline bulb. The old fluorescent tube was dying and needed replacing, so I figured it was time to upgrade it. I have already replaced the screw base lamp with an LED. It's a bypass lamp, which means it doesn't need the old ballast and starting circuitry that fluorescent lamps require. This means that you have to disassemble the old lamp and adapt it to the new LED lamp. It's not a difficult task, but if you're unfamiliar with electrical wiring you can skip it or have someone do the work for you. it was pretty hackneyed and ugly. Therefore completely disassembled, cleaned and painted. At the same time, he tore out the old wiring and replaced it with a new one. I also removed the ballast and threw it away. The new LED bulb comes with a new pre-wired socket that is well organized and labeled so you can't mess up the wiring. I tested the original push button power switch and found it to work well in the new application. All I had to do was disconnect the wires that connected to the old instant contact starter circuit. The new LED bulb appears to be slightly larger than the original fluorescent tube and is made of plastic instead of glass. The lamp holder of this lamp consists of three springy fingers that grip the lamp. The new bulb was a bit more difficult to put in place, partly because of the slight difference in size, partly because the plastic isn't as slippery as glass. But after some fiddling, it fit perfectly. The new lamp is much brighter than the old one, even with the new fluorescent lamp. It's nice to only press the button once to toggle it on and off instead of going through the old startup routine. I am very happy with this update. Please note that the weight of this and the original lamp is different. In my case, this meant that the spring function of my lamp was too strong and the lamp kept wanting to go up. I removed two of the four springs holding the mount and the balance was perfect. Often these devices have voltage adjustments that can compensate for this.
