Review on RSVP Terrys Sided Espresso Tamper by Srinivasan Bennett

Works perfectly! No problem!

I ordered this with my De'Longhi EC155. I'm glad I did. De'Longi's built-in plastic "tamper" might level the floor, but it's nearly impossible to fake. It's permanently attached to the car, so you have to push the basket against it with the right amount of force (40 pounds, according to some) without tipping the car over. Instead, I used this tamper last. five months and it works great. Others have complained of the plating peeling off, revealing matte, cheaper metal. I didn't have a scrub. I don't know if it's plated or solid metal (manufacturers are known to improve their products in response to complaints), but my tamper looks as shiny and new as the day it arrived. Given the complaints from others that it's not dishwasher safe, I wasn't stupid enough to put it in the dishwasher when it's so easy to hand wash. I wipe it down with a clean, dry towel after each shot so it doesn't need to be washed as often. As for claims that it won't fit the De'Longhi EC155, the diameter of the De'Longhi portafilter is 52.5mm. The smaller end of this tamper is 50.1mm in diameter. That means a difference of 2.4 mm. If we subtract the engineering tolerance for loose fit (0.32mm for this diameter) we get 2.08mm. Divide by 2 to get the radius and we get a 1.04mm diameter ring of earth around the rammer. Even if the sides of the portafilter were straight to the bottom (they aren't, there is a step halfway up with a 4mm diameter difference between the top and bottom) some of the vertical force would be transmitted. on the side of the sides, applying the same force to all bases except the top 1mm or so. So you have a ring of less compressed (but not uncompressed) bases about 1mm wide and 1mm deep. The finer the grind, the deeper the tamper sinks into the portafilter. When grinding espresso it drops 1-2mm so you have that 1mm ring with less compressed grind ON TOP of the 50mm washer with more compressed grind. When water follows the path of least resistance, any water flowing along the outer edge tends to flow away from this ring toward the empty space at the center. That way you'll have some loose coffee resting on a perfect washing machine. As? With a medium density (641 kg/m^3) coffee of around 0.1g, I'm enough of a coffee snob to weigh my beans instead of just scooping them. My coffee scale weighs up to 0.1 g, which is about the weight of a coffee bean.
