They make lovely little frames for hanging cross stitch projects.
For less than a dollar each they were made for very inexpensive frames for small cross stitch projects that my wife wanted to hang on the walls. They can be easily painted or stained so they don't all look the same, and it's becoming increasingly difficult to find small frames in thrift stores, so that's solved the problem for a while. The protective plastic on the metal came off easily.
