Review on Noctua NH L12 Ghost S1 Premium by Cornelius Mosley

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Same as 7 year old design; 120mm Noctua Fan AND Thermal Grease

I bought the NH-L12 7 years ago for $50. So the price is now $5 higher with this "ghost" marketing brand. A star is deducted because everything should become CHEAPER over time, not more expensive. The biggest downside of this kit is that we LOSE two things: * There is no 120mm fan in this version! (Yes, the old version had both 92mm and 120mm fans!)* This kit contains only a tiny tube of paste, barely enough for one application. The two attached photos show two heatsinks and two boxes. On the left of both pictures is the old original NH-L12 and on the right is the new NH-L12. They're identical in every way (except the newer one has an extra square hole in the middle of the heatsink?). However, the boxes are different sizes. The third picture of the tubes looks like this from top to bottom: Above is a 10 gram tube NT-H2 (unused). The center is the original 3.5g NH-L12 tube - yes that's the lot it came with! Below is the tiny NT-H2 tube that comes with the new version NH-L12 "Ghost". Some very expensive pasta was stolen from us in more expensive packaging. The 3.5g tubes that came with the ORIGINAL NH-L12 were $15 a tube, and we STOOD them. In addition, an additional 120 mm fan is missing! That's another $20 stolen from us. $35 worth of parts are missing from this set. This will be rounded up to 4, so 4 stars will be reset. Obviously the performance is great. Runs on 2x LGA2011 E5-2670v3 processors that stay nice and cool. Great packaging/presentation, lots of accessories etc etc, the usual stuff you've read in other reviews. The only real plus I can give over the original kit is that there seem to be additional mounting options for made-up CPU sockets. in the last 7 years. Okay, maybe it's worth the extra $5 (although I'd never use it). The big downside here, though, is that it's cheap: no second fan and no thermal paste. Sorry, but at $20 for a fan and $15 for a tube, it's impossible to let go and gets knocked out of the stars very badly.
