For years I have used pumice stone to remove hard water deposits after discovering it while cleaning pool tiles. This is the only thing that actually removes mineral deposits from hard water. Please note that these are not general purpose toilet cleaners - you want the toilet to be clean when you use it. So first flush the toilet well, and if you have a crust of mineral deposits left, take it out. They crumble as you use them, so they don't last long, but they're cheap and they work. These white pumice sticks have a finer texture and are particularly good for porcelain toilets.
