Smells awful when storing groceries

Pros: Easy to use, easy for my son to dispense, keeps cereal fresh. Cons: Smells awful and smells like granola! I've had it for 6 months but only filled it with granola for the first time last month. Before that there was candy. Personally, I first used it to fill my son's cereal bowl, he used to make it himself, and I was immediately hit with that horrible chemical smell. Opened the lid of the container and it got worse. I almost had to throw out an entire box of cereal that was fresh and didn't smell like the filling. I've washed the container 3 times since then and it still smells awful. It goes in the trash.
