Review on Milescraft 1097 Stand Drill Rotary by Donald Vargas

Works only AFTER modification. Not for beginners

If you don't want to disassemble and modify such tools. maybe stay away. Less experienced users looking to use this for a hobby will find it wobbly/barely working out of the box. I'd happily pay $60-$100 for it if it didn't require an immediate fix/change. Purchased to drill fixed pitch PCBs, pilot holes and moderate milling jobs. From the start it was clear that other people's problem was with assembly and not with parts. The tool holder part is decently made and straight, but it has been folded back. at a horrendous angle that caused it not only to tilt on the Y axis, but also to jerk erratically on the X axis throughout its descent. at a rather awkward angle as the nut was pulled to secure her. I ground off those burrs (and paint) on this main carriage shaft and on the ruler guide rod and now they both sit flush and accurate. The screw hole on the main mounting pillar was about 2mm deeper. I had to grind two corners of the included nut to get it to fit properly. So after a little modification it works fine. The internal spring doesn't have enough force to lift the dremel on its own, but it will keep it from sliding down on its own. After that I drilled some boards and it worked pretty well. The selection of such tools is small, and most of them seem to suck. If the company had spent a little more on assembly/training they could have had a great tool, but it's only good for the experienced and useless for the hobbyist.

Pros
  • Bench drill bit
Cons
  • Cable is shorter than other picks
