Doodle Hog is actually the BEST of all "regular " watercolors!

I have LOTS of watercolor kits including some professional tube watercolors that I don't want to "spend" on plein air or rough sketching and like many people I'm always looking for a good but inexpensive portable pot , which you can take with you. I wasn't really looking for this set but found it by accident but jumped at it because I happened to buy a set of Doodle Hog watercolor markers last year and I still use them and they still impress me. So when I saw this pot set, yes, I literally bought it, trusting the company's name (who can forget that name?) and my experience with markers. After my knee surgery last month when it arrived I had more than enough time to play around with this set and come to some conclusions: I LOVE THIS SET! Here's why: 1. You'll notice from my first photo that this set comes in a gorgeous metallic palette. Well I have a couple of empty pallets very similar to this one and I paid about $20 each for them! Seriously, they are identical. So if all you want is a metal palette (and when it comes to watercolor painting, everyone knows plastic palettes are the enemy; use metal) you can justify buying this watercolor set just for owning a metal palette! Strong, there are all the bells and whistles of brands (I compared) and I don't know at all how the manufacturer managed it. I will generally buy a few more of these but just to have the palettes before the price goes up as the popularity of this set is growing and I suspect it's a new product for Doodle Hog (?) don't know exactly 2. COLOURS, OH MY! Normally in almost every watercolor set, even professional ones, you'll find color families that aren't as well represented as you'd like, but to be honest I didn't find any flaws in color choice here. To be honest, the manufacturer spent TIME and ATTENTION on the color choice, which is not much in this "universal" market. To give you an example when I picked the colors I was just blown away by the blue, six of them, all true to their name (unusual) and beautiful. Green, typically absent from most sets, is plentiful in this set; 8 of 36 flowers are green! How adorable! I've never seen anything like it and every green is great. You can take this set to landscape painting day and get all the greens and blues you need with little to no mixing, and two great browns are included if you don't like mixing earthy colors. If I had to say "bad" things about color, I'd have a hard time working with black and lavender; I don't know if it was obligatory or what, but I had a hard time getting her to lie down. It will probably work, but I still don't use black. Yellow and pink are also very vibrant and solid choices.3. The coloring of ALL of these colors (except perhaps lavender and white) was exceptional! I used these inks exactly as professional pans in terms of water control and application to paper and they worked brilliantly: no dullness, no color dilution. The colors were vibrant, fade resistant and dried beautifully. I was even able to lift slightly with a cleaning brush and found it fairly easy (I use professional grade 100% cotton paper which I would use for any watercolor painting; you won't get a decent result with anything other than 100% cotton... so no hassle with tissue paper ). I know I'm speaking as a staff speaker, but I'm just an elderly woman in a home in South Carolina with no affiliation with the company, just home recovering from a new knee, but I honestly LOVE this inexpensive watercolor set. I don't know anything about this company, where they are based or anything like that, but I am confident that the quality of their products is excellent after this second purchase of their watercolor products, and if they launch a third one soon, I'm in.

Pros
  • Free watercolor brush. Each half of the watercolor bowl comes with a reusable 5mm diameter water brush that easily fits into a portable metal case. The easy grip of the brush allows you to conveniently control the flow of water while painting. You can create fine lines, blend colors, or boldly layer watercolors to create endless possibilities!
Cons
  • Big and chunky
