I have a Sony Theater system and have not been able to figure out how to get the TV sound when I hooked it up to the system and put external speakers in the TV settings selected. Sony's system manual states that you must use an optical cable to get sound from your TV. I painted my living room and finally removed the TV from the wall and connected the optical cable. Now I have surround sound from TV for local changes. The audio is quieter than my computer, which is also connected, but I just turn it on and everything is fine. I would recommend this solution for local TV surround sound when using an amplifier.
