This product works great but it really needs a paper filter. However, the filters need to be adjusted somewhat. I use Perfect Pod brand filters, but I cut a small hole in the middle of the top paper flap (fold it in half a couple of times and cut a small hole). If the top valve is not modified before use, I will find that the coffee is filtered too much and the brew comes out weak. I tried another brand of filter (the one without a top cap) but those filters weren't deep enough and I couldn't put in enough grounds to make a decent drink. By not using filters I end up with fine coffee sludge (like fine sludge) at the end of the cup - doable but not appetizing and more difficult to clean. Hope that helps.
