Very good general purpose lens

This lens is a real find, I use it on my Nikon d750. The aperture ring must be set to f22 to avoid an error message. I was hoping to set the aperture with the aperture ring, but for some reason newer Nikon cameras require you to control aperture with the camera. The lens is sharp and the autofocus seems to work well provided it's not too dark (not the best in low light). To focus the lens manually, the camera must be set to manual focus mode. When I first got this lens, the photos were soft. After a bit of experimentation, I found that it was reverse focusing. I set the auto focus fine adjustment to -10 and soft photos came out sharp. It's not the sharpest lens I have, but it does the job well. I paid more for this lens in excellent condition but I'm glad I did, I should get years of service from this well made lens. There's also a Nikon 28-85mm f/3.5-4.5 autofocus zoom. It's also a good solid lens, slightly sharper than the 28-105. I found that I liked the old "made in Japan" lenses better than the expensive heavy VR lenses. I shoot a lot with a tripod, so VR is not important to me. I also have some vintage "Made in Japan" primes that I've worn since the late 70's. They are still very sharp. Since they don't have autofocus, I use Live View to set the focus manually - it works well. If you're looking for a good hiking lens, don't hesitate. Lots of photos inside and out. Some of my best photos were taken with this lens. It can't be compared to some very expensive lenses but I give it 5 stars for its solid construction, good performance and low price. I've been using my 28-85mm f3.5-4.5 for about a year and I find it to be a very good all round lens. I recently went back to 28-105 and find the photos come out a bit soft and not very sharp. So I went to Lightroom and increased the contrast and clarity and now the photos look sharp again. I've heard other photographers say the lens has poor contrast and I think the sharpness can appear soft. See second photo. These older lenses seem to require more Lightroom work, while my NIkon 80-200mm 2.8D only needs a minor Lightroom adjustment. I just bought a Nikon 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR and will compare it to two other lenses. and back to my review. I'm looking for a lighter and cheaper alternative to the Nikon 24-70mm VR lens.
