It's a charcoal filter.
Not to mention this is a small charcoal filter that fits in the Hamilton Beach 12 cup coffee maker, model #46310. It comes with a plastic basket to hold the filter and a latch on the handle delivered for easy placement. just great - I didn't notice a huge difference in the taste of my coffee, but this is a home made drip machine and regular Folger's coffee. By using these filters, the slight aftertaste of city water has been removed.
