When I had to find a gas leak in a cluttered basement, I quickly concluded that the traditional approach of coating pipe joints with soapy water and checking for bubbles had been around for a while would take a very long time and create a mess. With an installation cost of less than $100 an hour, a gas detector quickly seemed like a good investment. The UEi CD100A seemed a good fit - simple, inexpensive and solid enough. It turned out that this is all. Operation is simple - just turn on the detector (in clean air), wait a minute or two, set a slow but constant audible tick, and then move until the tick is heard. speed increases. The higher the tick speed, the higher the gas concentration. (Imagine a Geiger counter that detects gas, not radiation.) Simply move the sensor along the pipeline until you find the spot where the pulse rate is highest and you've found a leak. The price is very reasonable for an electronic device of this quality. . Most detectors of similar quality cost more. The device is also quite durable. The gooseneck is a little fragile (especially where it connects to the tool's body), but it's a complex electronic device, not a hammer. It will last a long time if treated with care, although the sensor module will likely need to be replaced every few years. (This is a feature of electronic gas sensors and not a weakness of this particular device.) It's worth noting that this is a leak detector, not a gas level monitor. It is intended for installers, home appliance technicians and DIY enthusiasts who need to determine and/or verify that there are no gas leaks after working on gas pipes or appliances. It is not designed for continuous gas safety monitoring. There is no gas level indicator in PPM, so it is not possible to determine the actual level of gas present. If you need to find a leaking fitting in a gas line, this is the perfect tool. If you are looking for a gas analyzer for your basement or for OSHA compliance, this is not what you need. As long as you're not expecting the device to do anything it's not designed to do, this is a great tool. Pros: ease of use; inexpensive; strong enough; compact Cons: The gooseneck isn't as strong as it could be
