I know a lot of people don't understand the MERV ratings on air filters. The Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, commonly known as the MERV rating, is a measurement scale used to effectively clean the air in your home. What goes into an HVAC system is cleaner when it comes out. Most of the air we use in homes or offices comes directly from the air already in the system. Yes, there is an outside air intake. But most of the air we use comes from within. So if everyone in the house/office gets the flu, guess what, it's because the air filters in the assembly needed replacing. Once the filter's effectiveness has diminished and it needs to be changed every 3 months (or less), simply pass everything through the filter to the next person. Take a deep breath. Airplanes are worse. MERV 8 is just right for us at home. People with severe allergies should buy filters with a high efficiency rating. They cost more, but you get sick less.
