Range not as good as you think

We wanted these radios when my wife and friends followed each other on trips. Basically, they worked when we were close, but as soon as we separated even a short distance, we couldn't connect. Turned into a disaster when my stalking wife had an apartment. Her attempt to call me failed and we found ourselves in a difficult situation.
