This pancake is NOT stainless steel. When I took it out of the box, I noticed that it was light; too easy! I have years of boating experience where the metal components are made of stainless steel to prevent corrosion. Some components are made of aluminum. i know the difference I also have stainless steel kitchen utensils because they are the only metal utensils that are dishwasher safe. I did a little research and found that the average density of stainless steel alloys is between 7.48 and 8.05 grams per cubic centimeter. I weighed my pancake on a digital postal scale. It weighs 66 grams +/- 2 grams. I measured the length and diameter of the rods that were welded together to form the spreader. Using the equation for the volume of a cylinder (V=pi*(r)²*h) I calculated the volume to be 30.35 cubic centimeters. Length 26.8 cm, width 20.9 cm, diameter 0.9 cm Weight divided by volume gives a density of 2.2 grams per cubic centimeter (compared to 7.5-8 for stainless steel). Coincidentally, the density of aluminum alloys ranges from 2.7 to 2.9 grams/cubic centimeter. It was a lot of money for aluminum. The worst thing is that the shaker is probably not dishwasher safe. Also, it seems well made and will probably last me a few years or decades. Because it's very light, it's less likely to damage my Teflon pancake maker if I accidentally scratch the cooktop. I will hand wash only.
