The thing works exactly as described. I have a regular coffee cup (not a special flat bottom cup) and I put it on a plate and it turns on. There is a small button on the bottom of the device that is pressed when you put a cup of coffee on a plate. If you lift the cup, it turns off (the button is released). It keeps my coffee warm enough to enjoy all day (almost too hot). The less coffee in the cup, the hotter the liquid. Like we were taught physics. You see, my goal was not to bring my coffee to room temperature all day long while it was sitting on my desk. Mission accomplished. If you want it even hotter, you can cover the cup with something like a legal pad. Here's what I have. But I really don't need that. These other negative reviews almost made me give it up. I'm glad I ignored her.
