Review on MikroTik RBmAPL-2nD 2GHz mAP Lite Access Point: High-Performance 802.11bgn 2x2 PoE Connector by Antonio Edan

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Overall nice little device

I installed this device in my home as a low power dedicated spotlight camera hotspot. My other cameras are connected and powered via PoE, so the mAP lite is like a spotlight on my wired network. The FCC ID is TV7MAPL2ND if you want to check the guts before you buy. I initially had trouble connecting to the web interface as the documentation turned out to be a bit ahead of its time. Updating the firmware followed by a factory reset causes the device to behave as described in the documentation, but with the supplied firmware the LAN interface does not have a preconfigured IP address of 192.168.88.1. Out of the box it was serving an unsecured wireless network called "MikroTik-XXXXXX" but I couldn't easily connect to that network to configure the device. I ended up connecting the mAP to my computer and enabling Windows Internet Connection Sharing to share my computer's existing network connection with the mAP. This assigned the IP address of the mAP and I was then able to connect to the web interface. Holy Cow has configuration options. I simply used one of the quick settings to do what I needed. The reason I removed the star is because of the jack. Yes, the sleek design looks nice, but the connector that was actually received isn't very good. Holds the cable very well. Actually too good, because it's hard to let them go. I have to press quite hard on the entire connector and also on the connector clip near its pivot point before the connector releases the cable. It's not good for cable or plug durability, but thankfully this device is a permanent fixture. I found the PoE support of the mAP lite excellent. I ran this thing with a Cudy 802.3af/at injector (model POE200) as well as a 24V passive injector from TP-Link (model TL-POE2412G). I haven't had this unit in a very long time so I'll update this review when things get bad. It's pretty neat though!
