Review on πŸ”Š Enhanced Sony 5.1-Channel Surround Sound Home Theater Speaker Bundle with Multimedia Capabilities by Sarah Black

High power handling, plug and play speakers for my Sony 5.2 HT receiver

I bought this Sony kit for my STR-DH590 5.2 home theater system. I connected the speakers to the receiver (don't forget to buy the cable!) and switched them on and they were recognized. The thing is just built. All I had to do was put anti-vibration material under the speaker boxes and adjust the controls on the back of the subwoofer. A NOTICE. This kit has an active subwoofer which is REQUIRED for the 2 sub-channels. You might think that the information would be printed on the packaging or the instructions, but NO! I thought the receiver was defective because I was trying to use the Pioneer SX315 5.1 channel speakers this system was replacing. And all worked, except of course the subwoofer. (Pioneer had pretty darn good bass for an unamplified subwoofer.) I contacted Sony support. The engineer informed me that the STR-DH590 MUST HAVE a powered subwoofer. And he gave me a choice of speakers. In truth, I was lucky that the Pioneers subwoofer was not good. If one of my friends turned the volume up to max on the STR-DH590, those 100 watt speakers would catch fire! This Sony kit includes: Sony SSCS8 (centre) and SSCS5 (pair) bookshelf speakers rated at 145 watts peak and a 10" powered subwoofer (which of course has its own power supply) and auto-on. I looked at other combinations and couldn't beat this price for a 5 x 145w plus powered subwoofer kit from Sony or any other brand. My only gripe is that the black speaker cabinets look a bit plasticky compared to some of the wooden (mostly faux) speakers offered by other manufacturers.
