These sponge pads will make your tank smell like burnt rubber, which is crazy because the charcoal in the tank is meant to eliminate odors, not create them. 1 day after installation I noticed particularly strange smells from my only tank which had just been de-engraved and replaced with water the same day after installation. I ended up doing a partial water change, but unfortunately the smell didn't go away much. I ended up emptying the whole tank, cleaning it as best I could, letting it dry overnight and all next day, cutting some new parts from a separate gasket (same order) for my HoB filter and putting them in the slots, before refilling water. Needless to say, it was definitely an issue when I got home from work that day, but it smelled even worse. This also started with my 55 gallon with a brand new Marineland Emperor HoB when I installed 2 piece spacers in the 2 rear slots. The water is crystal clear but smells like burnt rubber and hair, forcing you to clean every inch of your tank and anything that comes in contact with that now grossly smelly water. If you can deal with a horrible, disgusting smell, I think this sponge is for you. As for me, I will never buy a product from this place again, and neither should you. If you value your fish and all the hard work getting your tank right only for an unadvertised product to ruin all that hard work, I suggest you go to a reputable shop and leave them alone.
