Certainly not walnut, cherry, precious wood --- but this bookshelf is made of 100% natural wood. NO chipboard, no chipboard covered with industrial grade contact paper. real tree. Easy to assemble. Took me about 35 minutes without stopping. Sturdy for what I use it for - a bookshelf (can you imagine that!?) and it's filled with hardcover and paperback books. Of course, using the meaning, you want all the heaviest things to be placed on the bottom shelf, and then in a closet at the very bottom. I ordered another bookshelf that cost more than twice as much as this one. From a furniture store. When did this bookshelf arrive? Which unit was self assembly? It was built from very poor quality chipboard covered in contact paper and vertical pieces, the longest pieces making up the sides? They were broken in half when opening the box on delivery because the chipboard was so thin and so cheap and unmanageable in transit. So I bought this bookshelf and I'm glad I did. If I need another bookshelf, I will order another without hesitation.
