Review on ๐Ÿ”— Smittybilt 13046B: D-Ring Shackle with 1/2" Threaded Pin โ€“ 2.0 Ton Rating โ€“ Black by Carlos Block

Good emergency bail for vehicle recovery

Most (current) cars are equipped with a towing eye (lifting hook) that screws into a threaded hole behind the plastic cover on the front/rear bumper (photo). I purchased this shackle with a 3/4" D-ring (bolt) to attach a rescue harness to this towing eye. The diameter of the screw-on shackle with the D-ring is approximately 3/4" not necessarily the diameter of the pin , although they are usually close together) and goes through the tow hook eyelet of a car bumper, which in my experience is usually 1 inch or more in diameter. This particular shackle is made from carbon steel and is zinc plated to prevent rusting. It has the required marking of ASME B30.26 (Important) indicating Working Load Limit (WLL), in this case 4-3/4 tons (9500 lbs) and shackle size 3/4 inch. it bears the letters "CE" which is an abbreviation of the French phrase "Conformitรฉ Europรฉene" which literally means "European Conformity". It should have the manufacturer's mark on it. So not sure if it's the manufacturer but probably not the US. If you need a heavier working load, use an alloy steel shackle instead of carbon steel. Bigger is not necessarily stronger, the properties of the steel from which the shackle is made also determine the WLL. This $13 carbon steel clamp has more than enough strength for my intended needs.
