I recently installed this thermostat on my RV's water heater. Just remove the old one and install this one. As others have said, the supplied spring needs some adjustment. I "stretched" it to get the maximum possible pressure on the water tank. I also had to crimp the smaller outside edge of the spring a bit to keep it from slipping into the clamp hole and causing an uneven fit. I also added a drop of thermal paste between the thermostat and the tank to ensure an accurate temperature reading. I tried without paste first and my water heater shut off before reaching the set temperature. After that I added thermal paste and now it's very stable. The paste appears to give an accurate temperature reading and also helps maintain a good connection between the tank and the thermostat itself. I've also had leaky connections due to pressure caused by overheated water. This solved the problem and also helped save on the propane. Each letter appears to correspond to 10 degrees. I keep mine on "A" which, after checking with a thermometer after turning off the heater, gives me an accurate 110F. At 140, we were constantly getting burned by a standard thermostat.
