Used to remove scratches from a frequently used stainless steel sink. Originally used 600 but went down to 400 and worked on building a new nice looking 20 year old sink. A little water will of course do the trick, and if you want a better cut use a light oil. Yes the sand will wear away, I don't know how to stop this as abrasion is always a destructive process for both steel and sand. Did the job very satisfied
