Review on πŸ”’ OWC Mercury On-The-Go Portable 2.5" FW800/USB3.0 Enclosure Kit for SATA: Powerful Storage Solution in Compact Form by Jake Hill

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Very well designed case but no FW400 support in OS 9.

Marked because the FW800 controller used in this case doesn't work with OS 9 for some reason I contacted OWC and confirmed that this is the case. The workaround is to use an FW400 hub or device between your Mac and this case if you need to use it on OS 9. I understand that this is about 0.1% of the buyers of this product, so if you do NOT need to use it with an outdated equipment, this is a good buy. The case has a very high quality finish, and thanks to the transparent plastic, it's easy to see which hard drive is installed. FW800 works fine on my MacBook Pro with FW800. The design of the case makes removing the installed hard drive somewhat non-trivial. Because of this, I don't recommend it as a case if you need to change hard drives frequently. I use it as a recovery and startup disk to fix Macs and it works great in this scenario. My only real complaint is that the USB 3.0 connection is Micro-USB and not USB-C. I'm sure OWC doesn't do this. I don't want to increase production costs by using a USB 3.1 controller, but micro USB is terrible, unreliable and prone to failure. If OWC releases an update for this USB-C product, I'll be the first to get it.

Pros
  • Stylish and modern design
Cons
  • Long delivery time
