A neat unit that can be "hacked " for other uses!

This is a nice little digital recorder/player. I bought it with the idea of using it in a package or greeting card as stated on the product listing. But it soon turned into a fun little gadget that could be easily hacked. At first I couldn't get the device to play my message. I recorded the message, placed the device in the dark for a few seconds, then exposed it to the light and waited for it to play. It didn't play. Since it was late, I turned off the light and went to bed. The next morning I went into the room and turned on the light. I overheard the conversation and it was the device playing as it should! It turned out that the device was in complete darkness for some time before being exposed to the light for playback. Looking at the board I saw that it was possible to remove the photocell and install a playback switch. So I unsoldered the light barrier and installed the switch as shown in the photos. Now every time I click the button on the left it plays a message! Good. I believe that with further work you will be able to trigger message playback using an Arduino or Raspberry Pi. After I added the button, my teenage son came back to my work station and asked what I was doing. I explained that you can record and play back a message on the device. For the next 20 minutes we recorded and played back silly messages. We may both be immature, but it was fun!
